Cape York Wild Adventures conduct 4-day tours through the Aurukun lands, from the Rugged Savannah Country to the Majestic Marine Plains, the endless River Systems, Lakes, Billabongs and Creeks and the wide open beaches.

You will be guided by one of our experienced guides and when possible a Traditional Owner will accompany the tour to explain more about the culture and history of this beautiful country.

The tours depart Blue Lagoon Lodge at 9.00am. The 4WD Tag-a-long tours only travel at a maximum of 20km per hour to limit the dust, and every 20 minutes we rotate the last vehicle to the head of the convoy so that everyone on the tour gets an opportunity to enjoy and view the action.

On the first day we will venture south on to Ti-Tree Outstation to view the wonderful bird life on the huge billabong that surrounds this outstation. We will then continue onto another outstation where we will camp over night and leave trailers and excess camping equipment as we head to the beach for your first look at the Arafura Sea. Then it's a drive up the beach to the historical Cape Keerweer and then onto the mouth of the Kirke River for a spot of fishing, or just to explore and take photographs. We then make our way back to the beach entry to watch the sun set into the Arafura Sea. We will camp overnight at the outstation and hopefully we will all get to enjoy a traditional cutmurry (fresh barramundi cooked in the coals whole).

Next morning we depart camp at 9.00am and will be heading south again down to the Kendall and Holroyd Rivers and then north to Kenchering Outstation for lunch, followed by Wathanhiin Outstation (which was a detention centre until it close in 2004). It will only be a short drive until we reach Peret Outstation where we will camp overnight on the edge of the magnificent Peret swamp.

We break camp at 9.00am next morning and head north again around the Love River across two salt arms of the river and on towards the Archer River. We head west past Emu Foot Outstation and to the mouth of the Archer River for lunch. Heading east we follow the Archer River up stream past Mipoon Landing where Cape York Wild Adventure moring their barge for trips to Aurukun township and on past Hagans Outstation and to Stoney Crossing Outstation. There we will pass the natural rock crossing over the Archer River which is accessible by four wheel drive vehicles then back to Blue Lagoon for an overnight camp.

When You Arrive At Blue Lagoon...

  • We suggest you arrive the day before your tour departs, as it is a five hour drive from Musgrave
  • On arrival, report to the office and one of our friendly staff will show you where to set-up camp and where the amenities are located
  • You are all invited to the Welcome BBQ at the lodge that night
  • Please have your breakfast and vehicles packed by 8.30am
  • A briefing will be held outside the office at 8.30am where you will meet your guide and Traditional Owner for the tour

Important Info...

  • Listen to your guide at all times, as he is the experienced one who knows the local area.
  • Our tours are not catered for, please bring your own food, water and camping equipment
  • Ensure you have a UHF radio in good working condition so you can hear the guides and Traditional Owner's commentary and ask questions
  • As you are travelling on Aboriginal lands there is no alcohol allowed
  • Anyone who brings alcohol could face a $75,000 fine (this law has been enforced)
  • All rivers, waterways, billabongs and fresh or salt waters could contain salt water crocodiles. Extreme care must be taken at all times, as some of the crocodiles that inhabit these areas are quite large
  • Blue bottle and Irukandji jellyfish also inhabit some salt water streams. Another deterrent from wading into the water
  • Visit your nearest ARB store and have your vehicle fitted and prepared for the trip
  • If you are towing a trailer ensure the springs are in good condition, and wheel bearings have been serviced
  • On the tour your experienced guides will be there to assist you. But on your way to and from Blue Lagoon, you are on your own

How To Get To Blue Lagoon...

Driving there

  • If you choose to drive you will need a reliable four wheel drive vehicle
  • Take the Yarraden turn off about 60km north of Musgrave Roadhouse (please note this is your last fuel stop)
  • Take the left and follow the signs to Cape York Wild Adventures or Blue Lagoon
  • It's a 200km drive from the Peninsula Development Road to Blue Lagoon Outstation. Roads can be a bit demanding, so please take care
  • It will take you at least 4 hours to get to Blue Lagoon
  • You are travelling through cattle properties so if the gate has a "keep closed" sign, please close the gate
  • Cattle and horses have right of way at all times

Fuel...

  • There is no roadhouse or fuel at Blue Lagoon
  • Your last fuel stop coming from the north is Coen and if you're coming from the south last fuel stop is Musgrave
  • Remember if you are doing a 4-day tag-a-long tour from when you leave Musgrave or Coen and return you will cover 700km, so if you need extra fuel bring jerry cans or have a long range tank fitted

Cape York Wild Adventures Vehicle Preparation

When travelling to remote areas its necessary to ensure your vehicle is capable of handling the conditions the area presents, while at the same time being able to carry the load you need to take. There is no roadside assist in Cape York, it will pay to have an understanding of how your vehicle works and be equipped for minor repairs.

Your Cape York wild adventure can be undertaken in most true four wheel drive vehicles, this meaning vehicle with a transfer case and low range.

As a minimum you should consider the following a must for a Cape York touring trip.

MUST FOR YOUR VEHICLE

  • Strong Front And Rear Recovery Points
  • Upgraded suspension system
  • Good Set of all terrain or better tyres (minimum 60% tread)
  • Extended Fuel Capacity (You will need sufficient fuel for 600km on dirt & gravel roads in four wheel drive. Approx 15-20hrs worth of driving)
  • Water tank of bladder (both for Personal and vehicle use, allow around 20litres per person per day)
  • UHF radio and Antenna
  • Cargo Barrier (If you are travelling in a Wagon)
  • Snorkel
  • First aid kit and Fire Extinguisher
  • Dual battery system
  • Fridge
  • Recovery Gear
  • Snatch Strap
  • 2 D Shackles
  • Gloves
  • Axe
  • Shovel
  • Tyre Repair Kit & Gauge Or 2 Spares
  • 12 Volt Compressor
  • 12 Volt Light
  • Basic Tool Kit
  • Spanners
  • Pliers
  • Hammer
  • Screwdrivers
  • WD40
  • Tarp
  • Duct Tape
  • Side Cutters
  • Zip Ties

RECOMMENDED FOR YOUR VEHICLE

  • Good Sturdy Steel Bullbar With Driving lights
  • Side Rails Or Protector Steps
  • Chainsaw
  • Touring Awning
  • Warn Electric Winch & Appropriate Recovery Gear
  • Auxiliary Fridge
  • Air Locking Diffs
  • Roof Top Tent & Roof Rack

It is always a good idea to carry a vehicle spares box to suit to your vehicle, this should include hoses, belts, plugs, a fuel & radiator cap and fuel & radiator tank repairer.

A good suspension system is a key item. You are required to be self sufficient for the trip duration, this means your vehicle will have to carry a considerable amount of extra weight, while at the same time be able to cover some reasonably rough terrain. All our Cape York Wild Adventures vehicles are all fitted with Old man Emu suspension systems. We've found The Old Man Emu Product has proved to do a superior job in both carrying the extra load while still making the journey as comfortable as possible. Please consult with an ARB 4x4 Accessories Specialist in regards to what load you will have in your vehicle and which system better suits your needs as the wrong suspension set up could turn the perfect holiday into a complete nightmare.

We recommend before departing for your journey, take your vehicle to your local ARB Store and have a pre trip check performed, here the staff will inform you of any concerns and recommend any extras you may require. To locate your nearest store visit www.arb.com.au
